      Found in Peru within a chamber used for an ancient human-sacrifice rite called the presentation, this woman was likely an offering to the site, archaelogists say.

      Announced last week, the 197-foot-long (60-meter-long) sacrificial chamber or passageway at the Huaca Bandera archaeological site belonged to the Moche culture, a pre-Columbian agricultural civilization that flourished on the north coast of Peru from about 100 B.C. to AD 800.

    Hace ocho meses el lugar parecía uno de los cientos de montículos arqueológicos que se hallan diseminados en Lambayeque. Hoy, después de retirar toneladas de arena, ha emergido uno de los escenarios donde hace más de 1.300 años los integrantes de la élite moche presidieron sacrificios humanos y fastuosas ceremonias. Estos hechos quedaron grabados en los muros de los altares y en un extenso corredor de 70 metros, que conduce hasta la plataforma principal del templo.

    El arqueólogo Manuel Curo explicó que las investigaciones desarrolladas han permitido tener un mejor entendimiento de lo que significaría el monumento arqueológico. “En muy pocas oportunidades habíamos tenido la oportunidad de encontrar en un mismo escenario la representación de ceremonias de alto contenido religioso, encabezados por los sacerdotes y dignatarios. Las representaciones constituyen el fiel reflejo de los elementos existentes en los edificios excavados”, aseveró.

    El codirector del proyecto, Carlos Wester, explicó que Huaca Bandera fue el escenario donde en una o varias oportunidades los personajes de la élite llegaron para presidir rituales de sacrificios humanos como parte de una ceremonia vinculada con la fertilidad o quizás con la inmolación de prisioneros de guerra.

    Descubren un centro ceremonial mochica 22/7/2010

    Está ubicado cerca del poblado de Pacora, a 50 kilómetros (al norte) de la ciudad de Chiclayo

    Arqueólogos de la Unidad Ejecutora 111 descubrieron un centro ceremonial de la cultura Mochica, ubicado en el Complejo Arqueológico Huaca Bandera, cerca del poblado de Pacora.

    El investigador Carlos Wester La Torre destacó que es la primera vez que se documenta un sistema de acceso asociado a un centro ceremonial moche. Habría sido construido en el siglo VI después de Cristo.

    Los dos componentes principales (el pasaje ceremonial y la rampa de acceso) guardan elementos simbólicos como disposición, orientación, volumen y ornamentación, que expresan el pensamiento o la lógica de división del mundo andino, conocida como la bipartición del mundo.

    La Torre puntualizó que el pasaje ceremonial, de 60 metros de largo por 7 de ancho, comunica el exterior del área ceremonial amurallada con la pirámide principal, donde se levantan tres pórticos y cinco plataformas en forma de tronos o altares.

    También fueron descubiertos tres entierros de élite de la cultura Lambayeque-Chimú, rodeados de cerámicas y ornamentos hechos con cobre, conchas spondylus y más de 50 crisoles, según la agencia Andina.

    Sican is the name given by archaeologists at Batan Grande to the culture found in and formerly named after the Department of Lambayeque.

    The Lambayeque culture is also found at found at Chotuna-Chornancap, Túcume, El Brujo and there is similar art at Huaca El Dragon/Arco Iris, part of Chan Chan.

  • Lima, Jul. 18 2010(ANDINA). Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed the remains of what is believed to have been a high-ranking official of the Sican culture who lived about 1,200 years ago.

    A team co-led by Peruvian archaeologist Carlos del Carpio found the tomb, along with many burial artifacts, about 1,500 meters west of the Lord of Sican's tomb in Huaca Las Ventanas archaeological site, near the Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary, in the northern Lambayeque region.

    According to Peruvian daily El Comercio, the ancient nobleman was buried in lotus posture (sitting with his legs half-crossed) and the finds included a winged eye mask, a ceremonial knife and a metal cup.

    The tomb also contained a breastplate of coral colored Spondylus shell beads, seven ceramics and a gold tweezer, representing a bird image of the Sican or Lambayeque cultures.

    Archaeologists Carlos Elera, Jose Pinilla and Carlos del Carpio, who work together in the area, described this discovery as a miracle given the erosive power of the La Leches river and the ongoing dam construction. (END) EEP www.andina.com.pe/Ingles/Noticia.aspx?id=o1+45K32mFg=

Mostrarán los resultados de las excavaciones realizadas en el lugar, informó hoy el director del museo nacional Sicán, Carlos Elera.

Podrá ver in situ las costumbres funerarias que se dieron durante la época Sicán y el culto ancestral al agua, todo dentro del contexto de paisaje cultural-arqueológico que configura Pómac... una suerte de museo al aire libre, un ecomuseo”
Existe la posibilidad de implementar un centro interpretativo de todo lo que implica el chamanismo o curanderismo, práctica que caracteriza a Lambayeque y que no ha sido puesta en valor.
Se busca mostrar de forma adecuada estas expresiones culturales, y el lugar elegido serían los alrededores del cerro Chaparrí, vinculado al curanderismo lambayecano... realizando acopio de colecciones de mesas de algunos brujos o curanderos ya fallecidos, potenciales donaciones también”, manifestó el investigador.
El museo de sitio como el centro de interpretación se encuentran a nivel de guión y formarían parte de la denominada Ruta de los Ancestros, a desarrollarse en Pómac.
El santuario histórico Bosque de Pómac ocupa un área natural protegida de 5,887.38 hectáreas en la provincia lambayecana de Ferreñafe.
Fue establecido mediante el Decreto Supremo 034-2001-AG, con el objetivo de conservar la unidad paisajística cultural del bosque seco ecuatorial y el complejo arqueológico de la cultura Sicán. (FIN) SDC/VVS/JOT GRM

  • Carlos Elera, director del recinto cultural, explicó que... el producto “Sicán-Pómac” tenga una mayor difusión, a través de una estrategia de marketing con Fondoempleo e instituciones privadas vinculadas al turismo de aventura. El museo tiene la colección de oro arqueológico más extensa del norte del Perú, y que el bosque cobija un ecosistema y legado cultural de alto valor.

    Actualmente hay una exposición de Sicán en Italia que generó el interés en Francia, donde ha sido solicitada por siete meses más. En Japón está cerca de cumplirse el primer año de la muestra Tesoros de Sicán... al referir que el proyecto arqueológico Sicán empezó con el japonés Izumi Shimada. En lo que va del año más de 15,000 personas visitaron el museo Sicán, de las cuales el 80 por ciento correspondió a nacionales.

The new Sicán Museum in Ferreñafe (17km north east from Chiclayo),
Lambayeque, inaugurated in march 2001, was opened on 3rd November 2001.
Introductory halls detail the historic development process of uses,
customs & activities of the Sicán (Lambayeque).
The Funeral Pattern Halls help appreciate replicas of tombs,
funerary clothing & ornaments of the common people & the dignatories.
The Ceramics Hall & Hall of Funerary Goods exhibit 200 gold pieces such
as the winged-eyed mask, crowns, necklaces among other precious ornaments
and a hundred ceramics.
An advanced multimedia audiovisual system takes us back 1300 years.
It is the most ambitious museum project in Latinamerica in the last 30 years,
& the first building exclusively purpose-built as a museum in Peru since the
Brüning Museum in Lambayeque.

 

The culture, project, character, metallurgy & history.

The Sicán (Lambayeque) culture developed in the middle valley of the Río La Leche
in the National Archaeological & Ecological Pomac Reserve in Batán Grande, in the
Province of Ferreñafe, Department of Lambayeque.
The Sicán territory extended from Sullana (Piura) to the Chicama Valley, near to Trujillo.
The name Sicán given to the Pomac bosque means ‘House of the Moon’ in the disappeared Muchik language.

A ceramic production centre 3,000 years old with technically efficient kilns, &
the initiation of copper-arsenic alloys were among technological discoveries.
The immense concentration Sicán foundries encountered in Cerro Huaringa
has no precedent in the New World.
Abundant algarrobo fuel enabled foundry temperatures of 1000-1100º centigrade
aided by the use of workers blowing through caña brava pipes.
The construction of foundries was preceded by complicated rituals involving offerings
of llama foetuses, indicating smelting was considered magic-religious.
Early Sicán (700-900AD), was followed by the most important Intermediate Period (900-1100AD),
when distinctive ideological & artistic styles were determined, there was
sophisticated technology, a theocratic state, elite burials developed &
long distance commerce is evidenced.
The Late Phase (1100-1375AD), marks the end of the culture conquered by the
powerful Chimú, whose capital was Chan Chan.

After 3 decades of systematic looting, the first archaeological project began in 1978
directed by Professor Izumi Shimada, an interdisciplinary & international team
(Peru, USA, Spain, UK, Germany, Hungary & Japan) of specialists in chemistry, geology,
conservation of artefacts, physical anthropology, Andean ethnography, ethnohistory,
paleobotany, zooarchaeology, conservation of textiles & others.

The Nickle Arts Museum of the University of Calgary displays exclusive exhibition of ancient Peru


One of the many exclusive pieces from the Sicán collection on display now in Calgary.

Thanks to the collaboration of Peru's National Institute of Culture and the support of the Canadian Embassy in Lima, the Nickle Arts Museum of the University of Calgary (Alberta) is presenting "Ancient Peru Unearthed, Golden Treasures of a Lost Civilization." This is the Sicán exhibition's first visit to North America.

 

"This is a very unique collection that will appeal to everyone," says Colleen Sharpe, the exhibition coordinator from the Nickle Arts Museum. "People will be attracted by the sheer beauty of the gold pieces themselves, but also by the mystery behind the people who crafted them - the Sicán of northern Peru." Por Wilfredo Sandoval Cinco tumbas de élite, de similares características a la del Señor de Sicán, han sido descubiertas recientemente

en trabajos de exploración realizados alrededor de la pirámide conocida como huaca El Oro, informó Izumi Shimada,

codirector del Proyecto Arqueológico Sicán (PAS), quien no proporcionó detalles de la ubicación de las tumbas por motivos de seguridad.

Según Shimada, en estos trabajos se ha usado radares que han permitido determinar que las tumbas halladas son pozos de diez

metros de profundidad con nichos que guardan complejos funerarios de suma importancia para la arqueología.

Habría ajuares pertenecientes a varios gobernantes de élite que hace mil años gobernaron la cultura Sicán o Lambayeque.

El investigador fue el que dio a conocer al Señor de Sicán,
